I'm very happy on behalf of Pete, if he likes the tunic, just great.

I know nothing about tunics, uniforms or cloth items. I collect paper materials, therefor I make no judgement on the tunic Pete bought.

What I was trying to point out is the fact, that certain dealers have a remakeable good sources for finding all the rarest uniforms.

I have traveled through german fleamarkets for over 10 years, I have spoken with veterans, widows and children of veterans. I have seen uniforms, Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht and Police etc. The uniforms I have seen have all showed some kind of signs from being stored for over 50 years. Almost every single one had have the eagle or shoulderboards etc. removed.

Now, what seems strange to me is, that some dealers, each month can show several not minty, but almost mint combat uniforms. The uniforms are often not the regular Wehrmacht, which I have exspected, but mostly super rare uniforms from the most wanted units like WSS, Panzer etc. And all with insignias original sewn on.
Please notice, that in no way, claims that the uniforms the professional dealers are selling are fakes. I just wonder where they find them

I see what you were getting at, my apologies as I am a cynic I guess and so many comments you read on threads like this are thinly veiled sarcasms.

I agree, it is hard unless you have good contacts and know some of the right people. Sometimes it's just plain old luck. I have travelled with Peter, many times now. I have met and indeed bought from some of these sources. I am the very proud owner of no less than five named Heer wrap sets, all with medals and wraps....some complete, and all but one with the owner's photo (or photos). I also would have thought this impossible to achieve 10 years ago or beyond my reach. But there it is....those and a respectable amount of other exotic and rare panzer militaria....locked away in my collection room.

We have come to an interesting period in collecting because apart from the contribution of the Internet over the last 10 years (it's hard to imagine how we did it really before this) we are also now firmly in a period where veterans are passing on. Their families no longer just throw stuff away in the bin, throwing away a guilty past, and hoping the neighbours don't notice.......they know it's worth money. And there is still lots out there.....I know because I have seen it. (I can still recall the horror stories, like my wife's school friend in Germany who's father took an Mp40 apart and put it out in the rubbish over several consecutive weeks.....or a friend finding the pile of Waffen SS zelts left out for garbage collection totally covered in paint because they had been used as dropsheets.....urgh!). I received just this week a Heer sturmartillery speiss wrap set, panzer wrapper and pants that is 100% original, never been out of the closet since 1945 and is absolutely mint. It does happen....there is stuff under beds, in attics and stored in garages. Even Waffen SS.

This having been said the tunic in question is far from mint, although it is naturally far from shabby! And most sellers of any product put the best and brightest up for sale, whilst offline trade and sale hums along....that's just the way it is, in many businesses.

Yes I am happier then a pig in SH*T with finnaly having an original ss tunic for the first time since spending alot of money earned in Bosnia naively in a certain place in New Jersey with an "awesome return policey" for 15,000 grand in fakes over a few years as an early collector. I had to slave in the Minefield and live in a tent in sudan in SH*T in 100 degrees with no air conditioning to get this money so im glad it was well spent!

Damn straight tony! ...Its very nice! Finally got it today (and got my old ss tropical tunic back too)....I found on the cufftitle area after some thorough investigation and use of a light the remaining 5 or so black thread stubbs from the cufftitle that i can excitedely see was once there!! ....one burned off thread stubb sticks right out and can be traced to the other side inner when you finnaly see it. Now im just wondering what unit it was...oh well...

what is the problem? It looks all fine to me....the Armelband looks a little dull, but the transferring of a cufftitle at the time from a previous tunic to a new one is a regular and practical occurrence. So that to me is a good sign. Nothing else I can see is a problem?

Hi there,

There you go. It makes sense to me that if a tunic is replaced due to wear and such that individual distinctions such as the cufftitle would not be handed back with the worn article, which unless destroyed is usually turned in to the quartermaster or issuing authority. in fact it was specifically mentioned in regulations that it was punishable not to "rotate" items, given the shortage of cloth later in the war. it makes sense to then have the distinctions resewn on the new tunic.

a good sign for me on this one!
