    Red Piped SS Visor

I was able to secure this Red Piped Visor, along with a Pink piped version, in a recent collection. The pieces came to be in that collection through Wolfe-Hardin. Besides handling some of the best Militaria in the world Steve and Neil are two of the few experts I would trust on these premium items.

I thought I would post some photos while I make up my mind what to do with the red version - the pink one will remain in my collection.

    Thanks for looking,
    Rich Moran

                Na und?

Well, I'll let my colleagues speak about this one and I shall not generalize about any dealers at all. My statement here would be that of my employer as concerns the presence of nuclear weapons: one can neither confirm nor deny. I repeat, I cannot make a statement from these images. There are so many refined fakes of these that one has to be very careful and, frankly, one cannot judge a piece of this kind via these images, alone. One cannot exclude that one of these caps endured in un-used condition (...surely Army Tellermuetzen can be found in this shape in a large #, but this generalization less applies to the SS in my experience....the grey enlisted caps I have seen--very few---tend to be very chewed up, more than the identical black caps which got left behind or never got issued at all--however, never say never in all of this...), but I would enjoin colleague Finley to generalize also about this piece because of some direct experience he has had in this particular connection. I do not want to throw gasoline on the flames of paranoia, but I have also been put off by the piles of cap images (grey caps with rainbow pipings colliding with the codicile in Mollo) from certain overseas websites which have ended up breaking too many hearts. A piece must stand on its own regardless of its provenance and its associated glory connected with whomever and however. This is sort of like the Loch Ness monster, really.

                  Look at It

                  Donald,

I'm in NY so a little far away; but I would be happy to send it out to Steve Wolfe and you can visit him and have a look at it if you are serious about looking - or are you playing the Devils' Advocate - I could not tell from your post.

Dear Colleague, Thank you for the kind offer. Two points germane here: firstly, it is impossible in certain cases to tell the authenticity of an item from electronic pictures; secondly, these colored piped SS caps are the object of such conflicted assertions, suspicions, paranoia and group-think that is functionally impossible to achieve consensus especially in this medium. Read all the posts for the last five years on this site and the GDC one.If we are all fools, then please say as much and one can freely ignore the views of the uninformed. Finally, if you are interested in my bona fides, look in Google or ask my colleagues in the US, Germany and Austria. I am not a dealer; I owe nothing to dealers anywhere, and my interest in German military history and familiarity with more than the regalia (i.e. the institutions, persoanlities, events &c.) is a matter of international recognition QUITE SEPARATE from profit or the dealer-collector biotope/hierarchy. I repeat, look in Google under my name. And, if certain dealers are the final arbiters of all truth, what purpose does any of this have for those of us still trapped within the Platonic cave and blinded by false images? Finally, since I am a professional historian, and forced by peer review and pitiless scrutiny to analyze the evidence, then perhaps such a question can seem to be unfair criticism. I do register one point, however, if dealers are to have the monopoly on truth, and the same is a Diktat, then there is little point to our reflection here and one can treat all of this as if it were the Communist Party in North Korea.

                      Ok

Well I think that establishes you are not playing the Devil's Advocate.

If you would like to inspect the visor I have no problem sending it for an opinion.

                      Regards,

                        Besten Dank

Dear Colleague, If I may, I shall correspond with you via private mail and I would also suggest the names of colleagues whose disinterested opinion I value to the highest degree along with that of the leading so. California dealers. However, I have no wish to trounce the opinions of Wolfe-Hardin or any other dealer here---that is not my purpose. The mission of these fora, as I see it, is to provide an open and even tumultuous debate about matters that defy easy generalization. This kind of cap epitomizes such a piece of regalia. If, however, this exchange is devoid of value, then we can simply accept what dealers tell us and collect in confidence without a shadow of a doubt. The clouds of doubt that adhere to SS caps are so heavy, though, that special means are necessary. All the same, if a dealer were likely to have an authentic piece of this kind, then surely the colleagues in Long Beach, Cal. would be they.
