    Is This Good?

I believe we have more SS-experts here than in the "Belts" Forum.
    Is this aluminum buckle "Keeper"?
    Thank you in advance, guys!

It looks good to me too. A plated zink 36/40. I would definately enlist Jean Pierre's opinion on any SS officer buckle.

i don't know what causes those keepers to look like zinc
but i think it is all aluminum and authentic

                Best Chris

Our French Canadian Man on the buckle

I second the intervention of the colleague in so. California as concerns expertise in this area. These things are faked to a tee nowadays, in a way I would never have thought possible. Ask him, which is what I would do if I had any doubts.

Chris, you may be right on aluminum. It has a similar look to my plated zink 36/42, with alum keepers.

                        Hello All,

If I am not mistaking this is the exact same buckle which was offered on the E-Stand a short while back and already discussed for the same matter. I did not plan to write another post on this buckle since I already said what I had to say and I really do not have time to spare just to secure a purchase. I am moving very far away from Montreal and it takes all my energy. So rather than sending me PM's after PM's a good behavior would have been to inquire before purchasing and not after. So, at least, the buyer knows what could be the potential problem and adjust his/her mind before sending the money. This is my last input for this buckle, so please read carefuly:

Based on photos, the keeper can be either aluminum, either zinc. Several original buckles in aluminum (and so their keeper) which have somehow oxidized over time are showing this weird gray tint. I don't know why but this is a fact. I agree the keeper is looking more like a zinc one but it can also be in aluminum. The original seller stated aluminum and so I did not see (and still don't see) a reason to have a solid doubt. Anyway the current owner of this buckle can tell for sure since zinc is heavier than aluminum. Furthermore having the buckle in hands and comparing it to its keeper should obviousely tell if both are made from the same metal rather than leave us speculate on digital imaging. The exact same feature applies to the buckle itself: a mint zinc buckle with all its original paint remaining will look exactly like an aluminum one on photo! Here again, having the buckle in hands will tell the difference.

Now, let's see what we should expect: An Overhoff SS buckle made in 1940 should be in aluminum, buckle and keeper. If the buckle is in aluminum and the keeper is not, obviousely the keeper has been replaced. But it could have been period replaced.
To the best of my knowledge, neither the buckle neither the keeper are reproductions. This exact kind of keeper (in aluminum) was used for 36/37's, 36/38's, 36/39's (Type 1) and 36/40's. Made from zinc it was made for 36/42's, most 36/43's and late war Overhoff's. So far, as I know, this exact shape has not been reproduced.
SS officer buckles made by Overhoff in 1940 should all been in aluminum. I have to say "should" since everything is possible. We still don't know everything which was produced and should be prepared for updates. But so far I never heard any SS officer buckle made by Overhoff in 1940 been made in something else but aluminum.
If this buckle is a reproduction it is honestly time to collect something else.

I am going to finish in saying I really did appreciate to read: "I believe we have more SS-experts here than in the "Belts" Forum". It is always rewarding to realize how helping others brings sympathy. In such case since it could be very true, please don't PM dumbs twice in 24 hours to get their attention.

JP, I for one, certainly appreciate your time and information.

                          Thank you very much! Chris

Thank you, everyone, for your inputs.

Jean, please notice I didn't say that there are no experts in the "Belts" Forum. I just think that here, in the SS-Forum, are simply more.

I am also sorry if my 2 short PMs bothered you, but I only had a couple of days to decide whether to keep the buckle or not. Plus, I've received a PM (day before) from a member who told me that this buckle reminds him his own fake buckle from Poland. And the comments that you gave before on this buckle were based on small images posted by the seller.

I am not a buckle collector and, in my opinion, not a collector at all. I simply enjoy these things and I really like to play only with original things (especially for this amount of money). Sadly, the rule "to inquire before purchasing and not after" doesn't work on our Estand where if you think twice, a thing goes to someone else. That's why I asked you, guys, for opinions, and I will gladly help you, in return, when I can.

The buckle is very light, and I am pretty sure, is all aluminum.
                            Thank you again.
