    SS Adler für Schirmmütze (unmarked)

    Hello,

I have the opportunity to acquire some different SS metal cap eagles and Totenköpfe. Even if I am far from being an expert in SS metallic cap insignia I spotted some know fakes in the lot. On the other hand, I noticed a few other fine looking insignia and I would appreciate to have your opinion about these. I have read several interesting threads about SS cap eagles but didn’t manage to find the decisive answers.
(In order to avoid confusion in the comments, I will start a new thread for each eagle)

    Thank you for your help,
    Mark

Never seen that variation.Do you have a reason for saying this is a repro Chris? Have you seen other repros of this type? Clue us in on the skinny

          Hi Kevin!

I have seen enough castings, to certainly spot a bad one such as this,
and yes, I have seen these in the flesh, plenty of times.
Take a close look at the details. I know you can see the difference too,
if you compare it to an original eagle of any maker. This certainly would
not have met the RZM standards. Anyway, it is a copy of the Assmann eagle.
Also note the third pin, which in my opinion, never appeared on any SS eagles
          other than the zinc ones.

          Best, Chris

                Zimmermann badge

Kevin, is this a Zimmermann made of Cupal or the like? It seems so. I think that I have seen a later version of this also with three pins (??!!), but it was in the middle 1970s on a silk topped cap (field grey) that was likely made for the SS Kleiderkasse or from concentration camp labor (I am guessing). I sold the cap in 1974. It had nylon-ish, cellon-ish piping, akin to that on shoulder straps. I stupidly sold that cap which came with a white LAH uniform (Heeresmuster). One of the rules of this game, granted the revisions that we have all undergone in the last three to four years (M1/17 or 475/39 &c.), is one should be careful about the word "never...."

I certainly would like to see some close-ups of that eagle.
Can't tell anything with those pics.

                  Best, Chris

Chris, I don’t know which eagle you want to see a close-up of, but I just intended to post a close up of the thread-starting-eagle.

I think my first pictures were not detailed enough but I can assure you that the details on this unmarked eagle are as fine as (if not finer than) on the M1/52 and M1/72 confirmed original eagles I posted. Beside this, I understand that the soiling incrusted in the recesses of the eagle adds to the whole flat appearance on the first picture.

Some cleaning would certainly reveal the fine details of this eagle but I can’t do it before I have acquired it. Below is a better close-up on the chest of the eagle.

I also have seen several copies lacking the expected details of original examples but believe me that this eagle can’t be compared to those easily spotted fakes.

Anyway, be assured Chris (and All other members) that I value your opinion very much and that I don’t want to defend this eagle : I only want to learn.

Thanks for the close-up of the eagle, although I was actually referring to Kevin's M1/72 eagle. My thoughts remain the same for the unmarked example,
but if you feel that it is original, then by all means, go for it.

                      Best, Chris
