Sorry to hurt one's feelings. I cordially suggest that the badge in question is fake and of a species fouling up the militaria faires in great #s. Look on the Whammond website to compare with originals. And, one should note that the expertise in this regalia resides in more than one person, actually. While the pins on the reverse show the attention of the faker to our effort, the front of the badge is pretty, bl**dy awful. Ask Kevin Finley to post some original examples from his collection.

That is one of the newer fakes as Donald pointed out. Look at the detailing above the teeth, kind of a mustache effect, which is not correct as Totenkopf have no mustaches Also if you look closely at the 5 on the back the bottom of the 5 droops down .Here are some original M1/ 52's

                          schoene Schaedel!

Thank you, Kevin. Perhaps now my comment makes more sense? Contrast Kevin's zinc wonder with the piece that began this inquiry. The differences are really striking. I have seen many of these fakes in Europe; in fact, they are all over and the moustasche effect is fairly staggering. The zinc aging in the fake piece does not correspond to the appearance of the real zinc pieces. Viel Sammlerglueck.

                            RD,
Sorry for the bad call on that one. The pins looked good to me, I have heard of the "mustache effect" but never really saw the difference. Thanks Kevin for posting those original examples.
                            Regards,
                            Fred

Donald - I suggested that Chris give his opinion - I did not state that he was the final authority.
