I think that the cap is period, but the black band is obviously added. The questions are when and maybe what is under it. Photos underneath the headband would be necessary to really authenticate the cap.

I don't give it much of a chance at this stage but this is another case of the photos not being good enough. This was also true of the other crusher thread.

I will try to explain and it's not the fault of the poster, it's the forum's fault because of the way it automatically reduces the resolution of the image if the image file size is larger than 241kb.

I don't know what resolution John's images were before he uploaded them but they are now 1200 x 798 pixels and 96 dpi (dots per inch)

1200 pixels wide is ok in terms of size for the forum but 96 dpi is very low and it causes problems when you zoom into the image. It's just not sharp enough.
Here's what I mean by that.

Thank you for the clarifications Ben, I must admit that some of the blame for the low quality pictures rest with me...it's my first time posting pics and I'm still trying to work it out. You're explanation of pixel resolution will help greatly with that.

            Thanks again

For me, the visor has been seriously been messed with. IMO a reenactment special.

David thank you for your view. I agree it's been messed with but the parts all appear to be original. It came with an original visor set so I wouldn't say it's a reenactor piece.

Cheers John, they used the cheapest originals available to hide the fact it's a fake cap. Zinc Overhoff skull with missing pins and a damaged zinc Assmann 3 pin eagle.

Thanks for that Ian. What value would you put on the skull and Eagle in this condition? I didn't realise they were common enough these days to be cheap... regardless of condition and I don't want to be over paying.
