Höhere SS und Polizeiführer Frankreich Dienstelle Paris metal plaque

i'm sorry to post this item for discussion so lately...

I would still like to hear opinions about this one, especially from metal plaque collectors and specialists.

Here are the basic infos on this metal plaque.

It surfaced as lot 910 of the militaria auction which took place at the Hôtel des ventes Giraudeau in Tours on April 14, 2018.

It was sold for 3450 euros (4174.50 euros with 21% of fees, without shipping) to a telephone bidder.

2 years later, this metal plaque is back on the market and is proposed by Xavier Aiolfi / Caen Enchères on their Axis militaria auction on May 31, 2020 as lot 1669.

On the 2018 Tours auction, it is said that the metal plaque was impacted by a 45 ACP bullet (11.43mm) and that the plaque was put on the front of the HSSPF Parisian headquarters, 57 Boulevard Lannes.
The size of the plaque is 50 x 40 cm.

A very similar description is used for the Aiolfi / Caen Enchères auction lot.

Carl Oberg was the HSSPF for France starting from May 1942 up to November 1944. He passed 17 years in prison and was pardoned by President Charles de Gaulle and released in November 1962.

This metal plaque was presented on pages 12-13 of "Uniformes" 330 (May/June 2020) as the "object of the month".

I will buy the magazine so i can review the rest of the article.

To my knowledge, no period picture and no confirmed history/source exist for this metal plaque.

Enamel Sign with bullet hole?

Hi,
That bullet hole looks way too perfect!! Almost a drill hole! Bullet impact to a metal sign from whatever distance, will split the metal somewhat. I've had enamel signs many years ago that were taken by allied soldiers and used for target practice and they've never looked like this! Looks like a perfect circular drill hole that has lightly cracked the surrounding enamel, although I'm far from being a ballistics expert.

That is a bullethole for sure. A drillhole would leave the plate flat at the back and surrounding area of the hole. Here the metal around the hole is pushed through. Also see the cracked circles in the enamel around the hole. That can only come from an high speed bullet impact.

I’m sorry for the late reply about this HSSPF Paris plaque that will be proposed for sale on auction tomorrow Sunday May 31, 2020 by Aiolfi / Caen Enchères.

I was only able to get some informations in the last days.

Here is how the story can start.

Once upon a time… there was an excellent association called the ASCOMEMO, the “Association pour la Conservation de la Memoire de la Moselle”.

Their impressive museum is located in Hagondange.
The association is working into protecting the memory of the Moselle department, including the Annexion during the last two World Wars with Germany.
They get items and documents related to their area and propose them to the public.
They are also providing historical informations to historians, students etc.

In the past (date to be confirmed), one of the collectors in contact with the ASCOMEMO found an original metal plaque for the Dienstelle Metz of the Rhein / Westmark HSSPF.

If you check the text of this plaque, you can see that it was made after May 21, 1943, when the SS-Oberabschnitt Rhein and Westmark were merged.

The plaque is on display in the museum (since an unknown date), as it can be seen in this picture :

Below the plaque, you will notice the two incredible Allgemeine-SS posters I do not remember to have seen elsewhere ?

Then, in December 2016, the local editor Serge Domini released the book “La vie quotidienne en Moselle annexée 1940-1945” written by Philippe Wilmouth, who is proposing pictures and historical informations on hundred of documents and items taken from the vast archives of the ASCOMEMO.

16 months later, the Paris HSSPF plaque was proposed in the Hôtel des ventes Giraudeau Tours auction (April 14, 2018).

Please find the two plaques side by side.
Usually the Metz plaque is on the top or on the left.
The Paris plaque is at the bottom or on the right.
