    The SS Panzer Wrap

The SS Panzer Wrap is a very interesting topic with much allure. In many ways this garment is a foundational uniform item unique to the German armored forces during WW2. Officially named the Die Feldejacke der Panzertruppen, the origins of Panzer Wraps come from a series of orders and regulations issues in the early by the Army in the early 1930s. The SS Wrap is derived from the early Army Wraps of the late 1930's to early 1940's.

For the Heer Wraps, there was not a single governing instruction or set of patterns because not all post-1939 changes were published in the Heeresverordnungs-Blatt or Allgemeine Heeresmitteilungen, but were apparently communicated directly to suppliers and depots by the army’s central clothing section (Heeres-Bekleidungs-Abteilung) where the tailor or depot were left to interpret these changes when they produced the wraps. The W-SS had a separate supply system had even less standard guidance, hence the wide variability in pattern and features in those garments.

In the spirit of other similar thread in this forum, please add your own items, but keep in mind that this thread is meant to discuss the features and facts of known original SS wraps. I would hope this thread does not become controversial.

I hope you all enjoy the thread.

I have posted pictures of a basic mint late war unissued Waffen-SS Panzer wrap standard configured wrap constructed of later quality black wool, lined throughout in two different shades of black rayon. The internal pocket, belt hook support straps and waist drawstring tunnels are made of the same rayon materials. Note the other shades of material.

The wrap has internal waist drawstrings are of black HBT tape, with black painted metal hook and eye at the neck, with four large black doughnut style buttons at the front closure, three flat medium sized black plastic buttons for securing the lapels and smaller black buttons used at the cuffs and to anchor the front closure tabs.

All buttons are originally sewn, having the standard issue RZM style machine embroidered SS sleeve eagle factory applied to the upper left sleeve using the T-stitch method, collar patches were never applied nor are there buttons to secure shoulder straps, shoulder strap bridles are installed, wrap's lining is stamped using white ink with three letter maker code.

This wrap is similar to the one posted in Scott Pritchett's wonderful book PANZER FELJACKE Vol 3, but this 627 depot stamped jacket is a different wrap. This book gives a very complete discussion of the these wraps, but there are many other features and variations not discussed. The books are scarce and expensive, so not all W-SS collectors will have access to them. There is much left to discuss on this topic.

I could say the same thing about cammo caps, helmet covers and smocks. Fakes will always be sold. Quality fakes are very hard to produce when you know what to look for. Knowledge is power.
