Carl Zeiss / Jena Identification Help

Hello. I was hoping someone could identify this item I inherited from my Dad.

It clearly is built to be mounted on something. That something is unclear to me. It has a built in slide and screw bolt to tighten it down in once in place. I was wondering if this is half of a two piece binocular. I have been unable to locate any pictures that resemble it.

You can choose between clear view, a yellow filter, a slightly grey filter, and a completely black filter. I remember using it to view the sun when I was a boy.

I have emailed the Zeiss museum in attempt to identify the item but received no response. Any help will be appreciated.

    Regards,
    RB

The M beneath the swastika clearly states it is something Marine (=Navy) related...
So maybe something for ships, u boats or coastal artillery related?!

It has some similarities to optics in this link, but not seeing an exact match. Perhaps of the same ilk... an attachment to a much larger piece of equipment like a rangefinder.

I know what you're saying. I have researched and looked and looked and have failed to find a picture that matches what I got. The rangefinder idea has come up a couple of times but that's all. I always thought the fact that the filters it has indicated it was used for looking upward but I don't know.

        Thanks.

Does it have a reticle? If oriented the way you think it was used, does it point straight ahead or left or right?

I don't know the exact model but, it's a Kriegsmarine rangefinder binocular. See
illustration for both halves on mounting rail.

No, it does not have a reticle. No indexing or graduation in the line of sight. Wondering if being used a binocular type system only one of the two viewers had it. One thing I need to correct is I stated it had a yellow filter which in incorrect. That would be a red filter.
              Thanks.

Thank you for the illustrations. First time I have ever seen these. My unit does not have any indexing or graduations through line of sight such as degrees etc. Do you know if only one half of the binocular system had these range finding units through line of sight or both should have them? How is it on the item you own?

The serial number is stamped into the base of mounting slide (123957). Can anyone help me in determining any history on this item?

One thing I need to correct is I stated it had a yellow filter which in incorrect. That would be a red filter as in the illustrations you provided.

Thank you for the help. Much appreciated.
