Misterious number - German Optics

Hello,

I have gained new optics and it has (for me) misterious number on it - see photos below. Does anyone have any idea what this low numbers mean? I am quite sure they are not serial numbers and that the optics is probably Carl Zeiss.
I also understand that after the war Dienstglass was removed, however there are no other marks.

Zeiss began a new serial range around 1942ish and this is an early example. My one is 996 if I remember rightly.
