    FU30a

Picked this FU30a up over the weekend.

Overall condition seems to be ok...someone has put a screw driver to most of the screws & has broken one on the compass face plate..[emoji848]

I think the only item missing from the set is the canvas bag that holds an oiled cloth (it’s on the contents list & in the packing photo) but missing from this unit.

Optics are clear & all the adjustments feel buttery & not stiff or gritty.

Both units are number matched 3567.

Post is photo heavy so enjoy.

    Enjoy, I do.

That must be a super rare item. Congratulations.

I figure, they may also have had some kind of sextant.
Unless they could use some kind of radio net to position themself. By triangulation, perhaps.

I never thought about that a radio tracking unit would have a need to orientate themself like that.
I have probably seen to many movies, where the lorry just go in the direction of the signal origin.

A very nice find, not that I know much if anything about this unit.
There is pleasure to be found in seeing good quality items finding a good home in the hands of one who appreciates them, you have had a very good day.

Mikedenmark & behblc thanks for the kind words.

Im still learning about its operation etc.

I agree I was very fortunate to get it in such good & complete condition most of the wee bits on these disappear & are lost to time. If I can track down the oilcloth & pouch I think I will have a compete set...[emoji851]

I was thinking of trying to repair the broken screw in the compass face plate but have decided to leave well enough alone. It’s not a huge issue & no point in risking making it worse.

Now to track down a power supply & another Gestell31 or 40 to place it on. [emoji41]

Glen , the postman left a ARG1 Luftwaffe astro sextant with me this am.
Standard kit on Ju-290's , a naval marked version was also used by U Boat crews in the late war years.
I have to be honest I will never be a navigator, finding my way around ASDA is a challenge for me.

I was watching that one on eBay. Good job my friend.
