    Carl Zeiss Septarem 7x50

Carl Zeiss Septarem 7x50 binoculars, Does anyone know when these were made ?

    Hi,
they were made in the mid-1930's.
if you can read the serial number on the disk on the front of the center hinge, this will define the exact production period.

Not a uboat binocular. Center focus knob means it isn´t watertight.
          Not even splash tight.

It would last a week, at the most, on a sub on patrol.
The danish navy tried center focus in 1936. All issued bino´s were returned in the autuum as useless/ruined. And they only saw service on surface wessels.
But they were cheap. Much cheaper than those recommended by the officers responsible for purchase of bino´s for the navy.

The Septar could be used on a sub. Danish WWII sub´s were supposed to have used Septar´s
But in 1941, at a meeting between danish navy officers and german officer´s, they were ridiculed for having the Septar. In the Kriegsmarine, better designs and models were allready in use by 1941.
Unfortunately, the story does not tell what models the german officers were referring to.
An ordinary 7x50 Porro I with large oculars would definitely be better than a Septar. Same would have been true for the german uboat 7x50 bino. But 1941 is a bit early for that one.

The binoculars was pictures, in 1936 at Olympiad in Berlin, used by Adolf Hitler. On the documentary films it is dearly seen Hitler using this glass.

            that's what http://www.binoculars-cinecollectors...erman_p1_.html says

He must have known his binoculars - my Septarem is a joy to use. It's marked with British arrows so must have been donated during WW2. And at some point, the objectives were coated (probably post war).
