Carl Zeiss Jena 6 x 30, Swedish issue w bakelit case

    Hi Guys
Just wanted to see if these binoculars issued to the Swedish army in 1942 are the same that where used by the German Army.

Why where some binoculars issued with leather cases and some with bakelit cases? any functionality purpose ?

Also there seems to be two holder in the lid what are they holding or supposed to hold? (I have not got my binos yet so I cant check) Are they lens covers or spare lenses?

These binos also seem to have some rough sandpaperlike texture instead of leather, anyone has any info on why that migh be?

    Cheers
    Bjorn

The compartments in the lid are for colour filters.
Such compartments are not present in the german army bakelite case´s.

The bino is, afaIk, the same as the german one.

The coating is most likely black paint, strewn with cork, then repainted.
In swedish I think it is korksmulor.

Gives a very good grip. But how they managed such an even layer is hard for me to understand.
Maybe, after making 1000 bino´s, some workman found a good way to do it.
(maybe they just cleaned off all bad results and redid them untill all were good.)

Thank you for the information Mike!
Sorry probably a dumb question but what does afaIk stand for?

Also do you know why there seems to be some different types of bino cases some made of bakelit and some in leather? I have seen both materials used on German issued binos?

          Best regards
          Bjorn

              Hello Björn,

congratulaion to a nice set. It is one of 9000 Zeiss 6x30 sold to Sweden in 1941-1944. It was part of a larger order also including similar binoculars from Busch and Hensoldt.
The Zeiss binos seams to have been delivered with bakelite cases but not the binos from the other makers.
They are identical to the German issued binoculars but are marked as civilian binoculars and as no WaA stamp.
The filters in the lid are yellow.
BK is "Blekinge kustartilleriförsvar" and A stands for the retilule.
As I already said a nice set worth about 1500 SEK.
              Best regards
              Robert
