    Optic part for identification

I found this one last week, in a former US Army camp on the Gothic line (Italy).
Considering it has been in the groun for 79 year, it still looks in great shape

This object has no markings at all. I think it may be american because of the place where I found it, but nonetheless may be even german.

I have no idea about what is exactly. It's clearly an optical device of some kind, but... What

    More pics.
Here you can see the two lenses, placed at 90° one each other.
Of course, this part was screwed on a bigger device.

Doesnt really look german to me.
Lacquer suggest US or UK origin. Same goes for the design.

What are the diameter of the protuding lens?
Will it fit into a bore? barrel, or the like?

A guess to venture: Part of some kind of optical alignment instrument. Not necessarily for military use. Could be for a surveying instrument.

          Many thanks for the reply
I'm adding these pics that will give an idea of the dimensions.
As you can see, the part is rather small.

I think it's american too, as I found it in a place where US Army soldiers stationed in the Winter of 1944-1945.

It's very probably part of an optical alignment instrument. But what exactly?
If I place the smaller lens in front of a light source and I look inside the object from the bigger lens, I can clearly see a pin that from one side goes through the middle of the visual field. Unfortunately is very hard to take a picture of this view.

I can see how the screws can be used to secure and adjust the position while mounted on, or into, something. I think it is supposed to straddle on something.
To me it looks like a small part of some kind of laboratory equipment.
Doesn´t look like it was meant for field use.
