How were the H/6400 reticles used in the Diestglas optics?

one division is roughly 1 meter at 1000 meter.

Meaning if you see a standing man that measures 2 divisions, you can figure out, he is 1000 meter away. (if you accept a man to be 2 meter high)

If he make 4 divisions when you look at him in the bino, then you know he is 500 meters away.

8 divisions means 250 meter.... about time you set the sights of your rifle.

More than 8 divisions. Shoot, run or become a hero.

Basically, you need to assess a lenght of what you observe, then count how many division,s and then you have the distance.
