I have been skimming a couple of Dr. Seegers books.
The Leitz with navy markings is shown. ( I probably even have some myself)
And, I think there must have been several numbering systems in the german navy.
One, prolonging the one used in WWI.
A second system, most likely, to consist of independent numbering systems within each relevant branch of the german navy.
A third system, where only one numbering list was used. (at least effective in 1943-45.)
And maybe even more than these.
I find it likely, that the 5 digit Zeiss serial numbers are in fact a part of the original 7 digit numbering list.
If so, then what was supposed to happen once deliveries went past 100.000? Another 5 digit numbering with a letter, or plain 6 digit numbers?
And what was the reason for the change to 5 digits? An order or, perhaps, short supply of tools. (unlikely to be a problem at Zeiss, who had workshops and stores for everything)
Regarding the eagle M IV/1 markings. These appear on a wide range of binoculars. Including prewar models.
Either I am wrong about, when this marking was introduced, or it was used on both new binoculars and reworked models.
Being human, I think the latter is correct.
I think I may have located the book, where I read about the german Navy Waffenämter. When I get a copy available, I will come back to that.
And another odd thing. I have seen Artl. with number suffix a and h. What does the a and h mean? (Artl. 1234 a and Artl. 1234 h.)
Yesterday, I found an 6x30 Weimar eagle, Artl nr. 85 G in my own kitchen. (a bit messy here.) Noteworthy is the capital G. Being part of the Artl. marking, it is not a letter denoting production year 1935, as G does elsewhere.
Has anyone seen other letters next to Artl numbers ? Especially higher than h ?
