There are some simple rules to follow re original paint on the D.F. 12 x 60 blc :
(i) For gray 12x60 there will be 2 x coats: a red oxide undercoat and a gray top coat.
(ii) For Sandfarben 12x60 - there will be just 1x coat of Sandfarben.
On Daniel.S's example -if you look at the photo of the base of the 12x60 there are some areas which have been bared to the metal casting. Here you can see four coats of paint:
i) first coat is the usual red oxide (for gray binocs)
ii) next coat to be seen is the former top coat - this is a medium gray .
iii) medium green undercoat
(iv) fourth and final coat on the base appears to be gray or is it black ?
I am intriqued by the 3rd and 4th coats of paint.
I attach a pic which helps illustrate the paint finishes on the regular D.F 12x60
Stew.
I agree with you on the original paint schemes.
It is only the green I am really speculation about.
The black crimppaint looks civilian to me.
I have some examples of hammerlaquered optics as well. It is extremely difficult to remove. I have used that kind of lacquer, and the type I used, was based on Toluen. Once dry, very very durable. We used it for repainting iron gear in connetion with chemicals for photographic developements.
