    Deer rifle

I bought a deer rifle saturday made from a k98, the scope mounted on it is dialytan 4x 709xx bmj +. The rings are serial numdered to the receiver. Too bad its been sporterized. I believe the scope is german military, Is it possible to remove the scope from mounts , if so how? Also is it possible to Id the maker or year code on receiver? I hope my questions don't seem too ignorant on my part. Thank you

Posting for Doglips,,,could be a sad tale of sporterization, either a high or low turret possibly by Mauser, need closeups of both the mounts where they attach to the rifle for the proofmarks.

Do I read correctly bmj 70983? Gun number on ring is 3874 i or is there a cipher before as the space would indicate? If yes, which cipher? I am not sure gun is matching to the scope. I would not take the mount off the rest, since this is an original sniper rifle with sporter stock. I wiuld recommend rather to buy a byf stock and put it back in original shape. Gun matching to scope number should be byf at the end of 1943.

              Rifle

Yep too bad the lower mounts and metal have been so heavily reblued and buffed. Would be an interesting project.

                Deer, Deer me

What has Bubba and his band of muppets done just to have a potshot at Bambi!!!

Please let us know scope number and rifle number for the records before anything else is lost to history.

I can put you in touch with a gunsmith, machinist and sniper expert in Ohio who might be able to help you or advise you on restoring it. It's Got to be worth you expending some serious cash on righting the wrong.

The no. on ring is 33674, its also on the receiver. The scope is numbered bmj 70933. Yes I would be interested in speaking to the person in Ohio.

                  thanks Steve
