My first 6x30 Dienstglas Bino's

Purchased these from a German Militaria dealer last month...

Spindler & Hoyer - Gottingen 6x30 Dienstglas

They have the range markings in the right eyepiece that are horizontal in increments of 10 each side of a centreline.

Waffenampt in the eyepiece cover and the Dienstglas marking has been scratched - I assume for post-war civilian use.

What does the 'M' stand for....? and are these a common set found?

They might be very early Kriegsmarine issue binos. Because of the "M" and brass components, IMO. I am sure some others will be able to add to this.

No doubt it is pre war issue (brass binos + early waffenampt), and as Willi says, I believe the M stands for Kriegsmarine. I don't think it is a very common maker to be found, and in that nice used state. The 'Dienstglas' hasn't been scratched too deep, so you could try to restore it.
Have the focusing pieces got a straight line or romboid pattern? Could you post a detailed photo?

the binos are a set of German Army binos from the late 30's. the "M" in this context means metric thread(This is stated on P52 of Steve Rohan's A Guide to Hand Held Military Binoculars
They should have a German reticle when the 6400 mil reference appears.

Yes, thanks for the correction, I do recall reading something about that 'M' for metric on optics. An 'M' also, under an eagle, is used on certain items to identify them as for the Kriegsmarine, but mostly leather items if I'm not mistaken.

The romboid pattern for the focusing piece is found on certain bino makers, but it is not my area, so those who know more about optics might be more precise.

I do have some binos that are very similar to yours, with the romboid pattern, but I believe they are Soviet made as the back cover only has one screw not three, as germans do. All stamps have been scratched off and I can only read '6x30' and 'mod.377xxx' on the left side. The reticle on the right eye has no numbers.

a nice original set of binos. Just confirming your earlier statement - the "M" in the context of the "Dienstglas" is an indication that the threads are metric

As said before M in this case stands for the Metric system and the Kriegsmarine never had the text Dienstglas on there binoculars
