    andy,
Nice buy . The EM-61 is an excellent piece of equipment and was the Soviet/Cold War copy of the Wehrmacht EM 0,9 M R, which itself was not a huge hit by the Panzer division commanders, due to it's complexity of use in the field, and was discontinued after 1943. However, the Soviets liked the design and pressed Zeiss Jena to put another version in production and the 61 was born.

Now as far as documentation for use is concerned, if you can't find an NVA manual on it (presumeably in German), then you may check on another similar device called the DS-09. There was a DS-09 manual on ebay some time ago and it seems to keep popping up, you may want to watch for it. The DS-09 is also pretty much the exact same unit, so it might be worth a try.

The reticle you see when you look through it appears to be a downward arrow surrounded by four boundary markers that you would orient on the distant target. Once that three-dimensional image appears to rest directly on the point of interest upon adjustment the range scale commensurate distance number will be pointed to by an arrow at the bottom. You would have to calibrate the device beforehand.
