My first Dienstglas could be addictive

I see these getting pretty addictive. My first two sets. Chris....
DDX has the rangefinder, BEH doesn't, but original strap.
Got these off epay for 200$, hope that was good....

Two questions....
1) How does the rangefinder work (calibrate to distance)?
2) For future reference I've seen these with smooth bodies painted tan, but what about smooth black?

Sometimes if your very lucky the leather strap might be marked near the metal studs....good luck
