    Bf-109 G-1 in Stalingrad

    Hello !
This 2 parts of Bf-109 G-1 (high-altitude modification with a pressurized cockpit) canopy was found near Stalingrad .
G-1 has been made only in February, 1942. Only 167 pieces. All planes have been sent on the western front, and only a few in March, 1943 on East front in J.G.5 - but it is the north (Murmansk)! How could get in Stalingrad?
    Any information is very interesting!
Many thanks for yours help !

Many thanks Leo for info :
..."only one loss of a Bf 109 G-1 in the Stalingrad area is known to me.
On Dec 17, 1942 the II./JG 52 transferred from Simowniki to Kotelnikowo. Because of an engine trouble the WNr. 14030 of 6./JG 52 made an emergency landing in Kotelnikowo, damaged 60%."....
I think this canopy can used on another me-109 (not G-1) as a spare part, and this me-109 was shotdown in Stalingrad area later !

I suspect that this is indeed the case.

Hi. Sorry Ptomnik but the pressurized 109G-1 (as well as the pressurized G-3s and G-5s) carried a specific canopy with a special vertical armor plate integrated in the the rear of the canopy frame which served to pressure seal the cockpit. This is not the case of your canopy, which seems to be the standard type without pressurization. On your example you can even see the standard head armor plate mount on the frame sides, which is incompatible with the pressurized type.

Sorry but it seems that this is a regular Gustav canopy. But still a nice part and in quite good condition for a ground dug item.

(PS: BTW you have installed the canopy in the wrong position, check the opening lever position)

                    Thanks Roger !
I know about specific canopy for G-1-3-5 ))) and "low weight" armour.(check photo).
I think this canopy was replace from damaged G-1 to G-2-4 and replaced regular heavy weight armour.
This canopy was pressurized 100% - i can made photos of some parts , only for pressurized canopy !

So, you dug this canopy out of that little hole?
As is, all on its own....

Seems weird to me..... the canopy all by itself.... in a hole....
...dug up.....with a crude shovel....yet not damaged by the shovel.....etc, etc.
                            Im sure its just me.
