Few people today realise that the Luftwaffe's signal arm was probably larger than that of the army. Apart from communication with the aircraft and maintenance and repair of equipment, the signal arm was responsible for operating the Luftwaffe's command net, the air traffic control net and the air defence net.

Think of all the services that you find in a modern airport, from meteorological to fire service, from radio navigation to fuel supply and aircraft maintenance, all these would exist on a Luftwaffe base in some shape or form. All these had to be connected by communication networks. Many of these required specialist communications services and equipment.

The gykes.dk website gives a lot of excellent information on the Luftnachrichten units: http://www.gyges.dk/the_luftnachrichten_dienst.htm

If not for all the details, the website will give you an impression of the complexity of the Luftwaffe Nachrichtendienst.

        regards,

        Funksammler

Great link Funksammler !! Signals I think are greatly mis-understood, with Sigs personnel operating radio links with HF/VHF radios, plus the use of teleprinters, code and decode messages, delivery of messages using despatch riders etc, the information ranging from single troop transfers to top secret information that can lose battles if codes are broken or fall into the wrong hands....

          Cheers

          Bob
