    That is a really nice photo. The cloth pilot's badge is very clear. I have also noticed that the yellow collar insignia often look red in period photos. They obviously weren't, but that don't stop them looking this way. Maybe it is just me......

      It's not just you.

      The appearance of cloth insignia depends a lot on the type of film used at the time. For example, orthochromatic film tends to darken yellows. Other times, blue and red will look alternately darker or lighter.

      Accordingly, noting a soldier's qualification badge(s) may be the only way to determine his profession or trade.

        Nice image! The NCO has an early Fliegerblouse which lacks the skirt pockets.
        Those originally also lacked a breast eagle when they came out (and later added to update the uniform to current specs!)
