Protect rubber cable for flight cap

Hi!
I have some flightcaps and the cable are in smooth complete condition.
Often we see caps with cracked/dry cables and Of course there are lots of reasons for this, temperature, sun etc.
What I wonder is, should I do something on my cables to prevent them from getting "old", dry and cracked? Something mousturising or do I damage them?
Do you leave them as they are?
