    Is this a LW Mechanic's O/S Cap?

I thought this might be an original LW Mechanic's Cap that some enterprising collector "upgraded" back in the old days into an SS Panzer O/S Cap.

Yes, should be no problem to restore it back to original condition.

I actually have an eagle and cockade for one, but they are unissued, so it would be quite a mismatch.

Just needs the eagle, no cockade for mechanic's caps

The SS insignia appears to be a cut up SS Panzer trap...
                    What a waste...
Kind of makes you think maybe period done after all?

Nick might be right...I say be careful before you take the insignia off, it could be a period modification intended to be a summer weight hat for a panzer officer. Unlike the LW or Heer, the ss didn't have the stringent uniform regulations so this could be period.

That is correct that the Waffen SS was coping more with shortages and utilized Heer pattern or make shift head gear and/ or uniform parts...so why not also LW if it was more in line with SS pattern...

And even in the Heer they wore strange caps...
Otto Carius, the army panzer Ace wore an SS pattern cap without roundel...
In his autobiography if I remember correctly it states that his overseas cap was made by his mother!

Could it be this one? Again he is a Heer officer...stranger things happened!
