I'm not sure if this might have any bearing, but I know some LW pilots (like Hans-Joachim Marseilles) had black manservants in the North African desert. There was a reference to this in the book "A Higher Call" about German pilot Franz Stigler, who served for a time with Marseilles. The pilots could have given these persons "honorary" tunics and insignias for their efforts. Just a hunch.

Marseilles's black "batman"/servant was a South African POW as I understood it. Here is more info and a pic.
" This is Hauptmann (Captain) Hans-Joachim Marseille, the German WW2 Fighter Ace known to the Allies as “The Star of Africa” and Corporal Mathew 'Mathias' Letulu, a South African Prisoner of War who was appointed as his “batman” (personal assistant to a officer) in 1942 and eventually became his personal friend." Yes, I've seen more pics of this guy and believe it's a servant, the hat with insignia is more or less for fun..
