    Luftwaffe Tunic for review

Im sure its fine, but I like the input of others. The observer badge is obviously a repro.

What do you think would be a fair price to pay?

            It has some issues.

Not something I would want in my collection. I have never seen a striped lining like that before. Normally found in the sleeves only. Also, I dont like scalloped pocket lids on LW tunics to begin with. However, the insignia look like they may be good. Can't comment on the pilot badge. Steve

Scalloped pocket flaps? No provision for a dagger hanger? A verrrrrry interesting lining ..............................................

                I'd 'pass'.

Loads of lufters did wear tunics with scalloped pocket flaps though ..

                    Indeed they did.

But did they wear this one? That's the question, isn't it?

Exactly. I have seen some very nice wartime examples but this one is almost certainly not one of them.

Also look at the shape and position of the lapels....

Agreed. Not for my collection either.

Capn - You have a poor condition piece with scalloped pocket flaps, an unusual liner, uncommon lapels, and no dagger hanger. None of these individually are red flags (to me, anyway), but they do compound. Couple that with the fact that Luftwaffe officer uniforms are not rare, and you'd have little reason to even want to vet this one in-hand. So I would move on without hesitation.

That's my two cents, at least; I hope that helps.

                          Best regards,

                          Jason

IMHO, it is a postwar Bundesluftwaffe tunic that someone replaced the lining in to disguise the fact. I don't think that lining would hold up to the normal wear and tear of daily use.

That was my instinctive reaction as well, although the liner 'revamp' had me puzzled (unless, of course, the purpose was deception).

A lot of early BLW tunics got the 'business' in the 80's and this one certainly has the attributes of an early Bundesluftwaffe item.

The 'clincher' for me would be a close-up of the sleeve(s) just above the french cuff. If the 'shadow' is present on both .........................................
