It seems to be the general opinion that the rescue flags/sichtfahnen were used less and less as the war progressed, with few photographs showing them being carried. Why then do the leather electrically heated 'Kanalhosen', which were produced from 1944 onwards (i.e later in the war), feature 2 pockets - one on each leg- when the earlier pants had only one? - or were they intended to carry something else?

Have seen the flag pole in one pocket .., have seen a rolled up map in the other, but I don't think that the 2nd pocket was invented for that..
Some kinda flare maybe ?

The dimensions are the same for both pocket, so seems to me made for the same item. Perhaps to leave the (strange) possibility to choose in what pocket to put the flag!!! I don't know...

But an army that during a long and bloody war, think about endowing his troops - that operate in the same theater of operations as the north africa compaign - of three different yellow shades, can also come to think to equipping the flight pants with pockets for right and left-handed guys!!!!!!!!

I have been staring at these pockets and thinking what what they could be for other than the sichtfahnen. After ten minutes thought, looking at the size and the shape, it has me stumped. It just seems strange to add two pockets late in the war when the manufacturing process of every other item was being simplified.

Yep! Almost all the garments was often semplified ... but the flight gear always keeps the same standards, even in the late 44 and 45, year of construction of this kind of stuff!

Bei der Luftwaffe hatte alles seinen Sinn. Und wenn 44/45 im Zeichen der allgemeinen Einsparung eine zusätzliche Tasche verarbeitet wird, hat es eine Beudeutung.
Die Glattleder Bekleidung war eigentlich der Fliegerkombination Winter/See vorbehalten. Und daher wurden diese Taschen immer noch verarbeitet, obwohl der Luftkampf eigentlich nur über Land stattfand.
Ich bin der Meinung das die beiden Taschen so verwendet wurden:
Signal am Tag : a. Sichtfahne oder b. Rauchnotzeichen
Signal in Nacht : Notsignalfackel
Rauchnotzeichen 33 cm x 4,5 cm Notsignalfackel 31 cm x 3,5 cm
Und nun viel Spass beim ausprobieren.
