    Real Deal Blendspiegel

This was acquired from a family in the UK - it was picked up during the war and 'personalised' by the son, and again later by the grandaughter! Original split-ring attached.

They were intended for carrying by fighter pilots and were part of the survival kit in larger aircraft (I think this version had a white pocket). For the fighter pilot, the blendspiegel was carried in the thigh pocket of the 'Kanalhosen' to which it was secured by a lanyard. Once the 'Kanalkrieg' was over and the aerial combat moved to over mainland Europe, many pilots probably did not bother to carry the blendspiegel, but it is illustrated in the 'SeenotFibel' - the guide for pilots on what to do in the event of a water landing.

                    Thanks All!

Here is another original. These have boon copied closely but there are constant differences between the copies and the originals, both in the mirror itself and the pouch..

On the first Blendspiegel pictured above, the staining on the pouch is not rust, but blood - period unkown (sorry! )
