Interesting eagle… I am not a big fan of the way the wings are embroidered and the skinny body (nor the big beak and fat legs for that fact). It is a lot different than the de-nazified one currently on estand which has excellent cello work.
I'm inclined to agree with Andy on this one. Maybe some of the more advanced guys could chime in here, but it feels off to me. Not even something I can readily describe, more of a general feeling (I know that doesn't help much).
I feel like it's approaching the qualities of a genuine eagle, but doesn't quite cut it. Not bad, though, compared to a lot of the repros we see.
If this is a Paki repro they have perfected the symmetry of the Luftwaffe eagle. They got the wing curvature right, the size ratio of wings to body to head, the evenness of the swastika and the overall style too.
Agreed. I think it's pretty good. Wouldn't even be surprised if it was genuine. I think the more I look at it, the more I think the orange celleon thread interspersed within the gold/yellow celleon is too chunky. I also don't recall seeing many examples with two types of celleon, although I have seen them.
Also think the eyeball is too large as well. Minor complaints, but some of the reasons I think it's not quite legitimate.
You actually see all kinds of beaks...some are fatter, some are more pronounced, like this one. It is interesting to see the varying degrees of quality in officer's bullion. Then there are the Italian versions...my least fav.
I think the pronounced beak and eye were added on purpose to give more emphasis. When the Pakis and other fakers do this, it isn't symmetrical and you end up with some chicken-seagull hybrid looking hunk of crap. I'd like to know if this piece reacts positively to a black light.
Actually I never tested it with a black light. After seeing it in hand and getting all the mixed reviews here, I decided to send it back.
One thing that really bothered me is the color of the cello thread. All the original examples I have of insignia made with cello thread show a much darker gold color that this eagle.
It may well be original, but just not something I want to spend money on right now.
I think you made the right decision, Tom. While not the most common item, general's breast eagles do pop up from time to time, sometimes in all bullion, some with all cello, some with both.
