    Parachute help!!!!

    Hi all!

I have a german perlon parachute, that one with the crossed green straps and the 'funny' bakelite red ball relaise. Hope you understand me.
Due the radium rings painted on the ball, I would take off that to display (put on a copy un-radiated ball and keep the original in another place). On the top of the ball there's a sort of screwdriver hole that I think made for unscrew the screw and loose the ball.
Exist a special tool for unscrew the ball?
Is a difficult manoevre (due the years that the screw is tight, the dirty, the fragility of bakelite) or someone can try to unscrew with some makeshift tool?
You never try to do it?

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers!

I dont understand why do you wanna change it, but my advise: DONT touch it. It would be a simular crime as taking an untouhed helmet apart, or remove original sewn insignia.

Your type of chute is so rare anyway - this alone should make you not even think about "raping" it...

      Hi there!

Yes, I know! Always I don't touch anything that come untouched from the WWII...

But on the relaise ball of that kind of rig, there's a ring painted with radium paint, revelated by Geiger counter, and I am not very calm to hold exposes him...

That's true that I have tested it with my friend's geiger counter ... but the display numbers on the display grew notably.

For the one whom had not understood, the parachute is that portrait in the not so clear photo!

If you're not sleeping with the parachute, it's not a problem.

Good for your friend, now he hasn't turn on the light in the evening ..

Think the radiation is quite low if you don't hold the chute near your face all the time, it's not something spreading in a room, just keep some distance, same with the Feldgendarmerie breast shields, keeping them behind glass is the best thing or keep some distance... and don't swallow them !

I wouldn't ruin the chute though, some people have tons of stuff in their collection containing radium, not saying it's good, but they're doing pretty well.
Many pilots have been in contact with this stuff for long time and died at high age.
Just don't mess with the material, don't create radium dust and loose particals etc, once in the body it's hard to get rid of it.

                  Jos.

I've had one of these for 30 years and I'm still around!

The others are correct. Unless you keep it right next to you for extended periods, you will not have any problem. If there is any sign that the radium is beginning to "powder", you should coat the ball with a thin coat of clear lacquer.

                      Thanks to all!

But it is really the dust to frighten me. It is able to stick on and can be inhaled...

That's true that the crew was next to lots of 'radiun' item for a long time... but is materiale that is better to keep off... And the glass can't stop it.

                      Cheers!

Sure, but his cat have now three eyes!

Something like Springfield's fish that live next to the nuclear plant!

                            Thanks Fw!

Maybe in the wrist watch there's more radium...
But that in the rings painted on my chute (yes in the ball of mine, the paint is draw as a ring, around the circonference), its enough to scare me...
