I agree. This is happening more and more. Though I have a number of photos, this is the major reason I stopped buying them.

It just depends on what your passion is.

I have several photos in my collection that I have paid over $500.00 each for, but they are very rare and sought after images (some are US military). I also have color slides that I paid almost twice that amount for.

But it is all relative. I'm sure there are photo collectors who think we are crazy to pay $5000 to $10,000 for a uniform or a old hat, but we do.

Besides, if it is just about the money, only a "photo" collector can reproduce items from his collection at little to no cost, and sell declared copies to make a profit.

I agree completely. We sound like hypocrites here. 99% of the population thinks we're idiots for spending the kind of money we do on these trinkets. Historically important photographs commonly commamd these prices from interested parties.

Thanks god there are many more idiots out there, spending money for e.g. toys, stamps, whatever - or art (I like art), but look how much the value of some of the greatest paintings have dropped in just a few years...

There is no better investement than our "old junk"

The price of photos on ebay rose sharply a few years back because of 'sudek13' (?). Remember him? He was buying up all interesting photos of staffel badges, armour, fighter aircraft, fighter pilots with RK, etc., etc., at any price no matter how high it got. I think it would have been rare that he didn't win any photos he was bidding on.

Is 'sudek13' still on the scene? Maybe under a different name now.

Some militaria continues to rise in price, especially the rarer and nicer items. But if you monitor the e-stand and dealer sites, you will definately see a pattern of the "common" items sitting around at the same price, or even a bit lower. But I would not say there has been any major reduction overall.

Compared to other types of antiques, our items of interest are still undervalued in many respects. I was listening to the "Antique Roadshow" on TV last night (I've never watched it before) and I heard them value a small ceramic pig from the late 1800's at $5,000-$7,000, and a named, worn, professional football jersey from the 1970's at $30-40,000. I think we are doing just fine, even with the temporary decline in value of some items.

The value of that $500.00 photo will still increase in the future - they're not making any more of this stuff (excluding the fakes).

sudek13 and his staff are the main reason I paid over $500.00 for several photos, I wanted them and I knew I was competing against sudek13. But I lost a lot to him as well.

I believe his people are still around, but maybe not buying as much as before.

Tunics, caps, badges, personal equipment, essentially nothing commands the same price as 5 years ago. That was easy.

I agree with Ian. There have been some tunics on E-Stand that have gone unsold priced at half of what the same jacket would likely have sold for four years ago. Look at unnamed tailor made Heer officer tunics in common branch pipings like Artillerie and Infanterie for instance. I don't see common awards selling for the prices of a few years ago, either.

To get back to the subject of this thread, I can imagine that this photo might have sold for more than $1000 a few years ago when sudek13 was bidding these type of photos into orbit.
