    Leather Flight Helmet Without Headphones

This helmet does not have earphones in it: the "tail" fitting on the back is missing.

Was this typical? Is this odd?

Did the Germans ever remove or modify these?

Yep, throat mics and cord were removed. Difficult to say when; if damaged during the war these parts could have been removed to turn it into a generic flight helmet for wear in aircraft with no radio gear

Thanks Gene, for confirming that they were issued wired. Bill, it is sure possible the electronics were removed, and I guess it will be difficult to tell if it was wartime or postwar modified.

                Thanks for weighing in.

                regards, Robert

                  Hi there!

I think that the avionic was cut-off after the war. Most probably to de-militarize the gear, as happened to lots of garnment. There's not sense cut the throat mic during the conflict. If someone would get a not-wiring helmet, could pick up an helmet of that type.... But almost all the flight crew, as the period pics stated, wore wired helmet, as they became available.

                  Cheers!

Yes you see a lot of these with the electronics missing which would lead me to believe what Frank was saying. Still cool though.
