Grey LW Eagle - What is from?

Hello All,

I am not a LW collector, but, spotted an unusual eagle and am wondering what type of uniform or clothing it might have been from (provided it is legitimate). Might it be off of a lighter-weight 'blau meliert' type of shirt that had the trapezoid (triangle) eagle. I didn't have the chance to measure it, but, it I believe it was slightly larger than a standard EM eagle at about 3.5 inches in length across the top leg of the triangle. The color is a grey/white eagle on a light grey background.

I think this is a later shirt eagle. It is not Blaumeliert IMO and might have been worn on a shirt that was not Blaumeliert either. The later shirts were just blue.

Here are some better pictures taken outside in direct sunlight. The overall length of the cloth is 4 3/4" (12cm) x 2" (5.2cm) tall. The length of each of the triangle "legs" is 3 1/8" (8cm). Total wingspan of the eagle tip to tip is 3 3/4" (9.5cm).

It is not a Blaumeliert eagle. There have been a number of Blaumeliert eagles shown on the forum in the past.

I found reference, in Angolia & Schlict's Uniforms & Traditions of the Luftwaffe, Volume 1, page 326, to the drill uniform ("Drilchanzug"), and am wondering if this is a possible candidate for the breast eagle?

Some of the text states:

"The fabric was a "raw grey" (rohgrau) twill. This was replaced by a black twill uniform by an order (LV37, No. 943) dated 16 July 1937, with the grey uniforms to be worn out. By order (LV 40, No. 708) dated 4 June 1940 the color was again changed to grey. The fabric was made of linen or, later, of a mix with artificial yarn... Grey twill uniforms also tended to bleach to a white-grey or off-white color after frequent washings, which resulted in a wide range of colors between off-white to grey."

There is a picture of some fresh recruits wearing the "raw grey" drill uniforms, but, I can't make out any breast eagles...

I am not saying it is not an original, I am just saying it is not a Blaumeliert eagle.

I agree and understand that it is not a Blaumeliert eagle.

I am just trying to figure out what it could be, or what it is and found that reference. Wondering if that helps put me on the right track, or if it is a reasonable assumption that it could be an eagle from a drill uniform.

I don't believe the eagle that started the thread is authentic with that lattice style weave on the reverse, it reminds me of California Patch King material.

Hello William,

I did take the eagle with me to the MAX show this past year and George Peterson also suggested it was U.S. made. He mentioned a "collectors" organization that arose right after the war and provided me the name of the group or the company that made the insignia, but, I have misplaced my notes at the moment. I don't believe he specifically called out Patch King.
