    Luftwaffe Vinyl Map

Recently picked up this 1940 dated vinyl map for the Mediterranean.
Could somebody please tell me if it is a rare example.
Your honest opinions would be welcome.

    Many thanks, Gareth

Not rare, but very nice. Yellow maps were for night-time navigation.

I have always wondered how to get the folds out of these maps.

I wouldn't worry about trying to get the folds out, they were folded when issued and carried. BUT, if one wanted to get one flattened for framing, cover it in a linen cloth and apply a warm iron.

Thanks, Harry. I tried a hair dryer, but as soon as it cooled down, the creases imediately reappeared.

I had my mercator professionally framed in glass on both sides and it sat nice and flat in the glass...the framing job cost more than the value of the map but it looked great.

Yes, trapped between glass is a solution, not just hanging, they're quite heavy and baggy ..

Think the folds come out after 65 years, it's a bit like the gasmasks, you don't get those folds out, not even in hot water.
Be careful with the iron though, it might shrink the area if too hot, the maps are kinda plastic.

These Mercator maps are quite nice.
I once owned one which never was folded, not even one wrinkle, had it rolled up around a piece of broomstick for a while and eventually sold it.

                      Jos.
