    HG Panzer Wrapper questions

    Were the Panzer wrappers used by armored HG units the same "model" (if there is "one") as the Heer Panzer wrappers or were there differences besides, obviously, insignia? Judging from surviving examples, which color/material for the lining was mostly prevalent?

    Thanks for your replies!

    They wore the Heer pattern as well as a Luftwaffe variant with more pointy collars and purplish satin lining. As for insignia there were several variations of collar tabs including having none at all (like my wrapper).

      Which HG personnel received and actually used the Panzer wrapper? I have a picture of my grandfather wearing one (cf. my avatar), but he was in the Flakregiment, last rank Oberwachtmeister and doing the job of Schirrmeister (i.e. responsible for the motor pool). My grandmother told me that she burned this uniform because she feared that the approaching Amis would think it an SS jacket (because it was black and had the skulls on the collar). And that happened somewhere totally different than where the Fallschirm-Panzerkorps (and therefore my grandfather) was at war's end. My interim thought is that the wrapper was, at least for some HG personnel, more like a dress uniform and a distinction for belonging to this unit?

        Was he possibly in the HG Panzer Regiment prior to going Flak? As he made rank he was put where needed perhaps? Post a full size pic of your Opa if you can as well as any others.

          While HG uniforms are relatively rare today due to the fact that they were but one Panzer division (later nominally two) compared to numerous Heer and SS Panzer units, nevertheless they ( HG Fallschirm Panzer Division) seem to have been less strict in limiting members who were authorized to wear the armored personnel uniform, particularly the black Panzer uniform. You will see quite a few period photographs of Sturmgeschutz and Flak troops wearing the black uniform (wrappers). I am not at all surprised that your grandfather was issued one as he was likely in a motorized Flak unit.

            Erich Johann,

            Could we see the full sized photo of your grandfather that you use for your avatar? Do you have more photographs of him in a wrap than just the one? Please feel free to watermark the photo(s) so no one can use it without credit. Thanks,

            Richard

              Prior to transferring to the Fallschirm-Panzerdivision, he was in the "Flakregiment Holland." Unfortunately, I do not have the permission to post attachments, but I could send it to somebody who does.

              I also thought that he would get one because his unit was motorized--and because he was responsible for the motor pool.

              I have two photos of him wearing a wrapper (both must be from the same sitting): one with the black Fliegermütze, one with his Schirmmütze. Breast eagle is one with feldblau backing.

                It is a mistake to believe that wrappers worn by LW personnel were from Heer stocks, they were manufactured for specific LW use.
                Indeed the pattern was the same for Heer but as stated with few variants.

                Erich, would be great to see your pictures, thanks in advance.

                        HG Photo;

                        A really nice photo of your Grandfather.
                        As Luca said, most LW issued early (42-43) HG black wrappers had specific markings inside denoting them as such. Again, great photo.
