Gents,
I am working on an in-depth article on luftwaffe shooting lanyards. If you have one of ANY grade you would let me use please contact me!
In doing the research I have come upon an interesting phenomenon. Makers often mixed the grade 1-4 and 5-8 knots and badges on the lanyards.
1-4 was a gunmetal badge and a salt & pepper knot
5-8 was a silver badge and silver knot
I have found grade 1-4 badges with the following:
gunmetal badge and salt & pepper knots
gunmetal badge and mix of knots
gunmetal badge and silver knots
silver badge and silver knots
silver badge and a mix of knots
silver badge and gunmetal knots
It is amazing that German producers were supposed to hew so closely to regulations but were quite lazy about it. I have found NO eidence to show any were tampered with postwar. In handling many, many lanyards it appears the 1-4 and 5-8 parts were mixed willy-nilly.
All comments appreciated!
This is from a grade 2 lanyard which should have salt & pepper knots and a gunmetal badge:
