Flight cap / O2 mask, strange combination.

Here's a strange picture, 1940, flight cap with strange hooks, hooks are too high for the early O2 mask IMO, which was only a hose with mouth piece ..
Any ideas ?

Maybe there is something under his cap protecting his head that makes the cap is higher on his skull !?
