Can anyone tell me what this would have been used for or what it carried.Size is 32x 28 cm.I presume its Luftwaffe because of its color.

Looks like it could have contained map/range-finding grids. Used in connection with artillery. Similar to, but not the same, as the item covered in the following thread:
