Nice pieces; why did the vets have to destroy tunics, shirts, pennants, flags, etc.,?

I guess an infantryman in combat did not have much space in the breadbag to keep souvenirs.
              Nice eagles

Nice examples. The tropical eagle looks like it was cut from an unissued tunic.

Not unusual for troops to come across unit supply stocks and could not carry the item, so they cut off a piece and moved on.

Not saying it is the case in this example, but for decades after the war insignia was cut off of uniforms and the uniforms thrown away. I knew of a case where a veteran sent home a large pile of unissued FJ water pattern smocks (12 or so), and after decades he cut the eagles out and threw the smocks away. Lots of reasons for this: moving, nagging wives, kids don't want it, don't understand or care about the value, even stories like "my wife threw those smelly things away when I wasn't home", etc.
