For what use was this WW1 stick grenade converted??

For what use was this WW1 stick grenade converted? It is an authentic WW1 grenade. Dated 1916. I thought it might have been modified to use as a torch or lighting. Any thoughts appreciated.

Maybe for practice or dewatted for safety purposes(?)....I would think more the latter....Bodes
