    Researching shrapnel relic

I have a piece of shrapnel mounted on a wooden block on which is written ' Off the Everard'. I'm guessing it is probably the name of a ship but I cannot find any reference online to HMS, SS or MV Everard and I don't know if it's first or second world war. Not much point posting a picture even if I could as it's just a rough shard of steel 70mm by 25mm, but the gauge of the metal is about 15mm, so I'm guessing it would be a large shell rather than a bomb casing? It's a long shot but I though I would ask anyway. Thanks. P.S. Some local guy suggested it was from a large artillery piece which exploded on firing, but I don't buy that story.

The Ethel Everard was abandoned at Dunkirk during the evacuation of the troops in 1940
