    German Smoke Grenade HGR 39

I have one of these grenades and it still has some of the smoking compound in the head. The compound is brick hard. I was wondering if anyone knows if the compound will give off any fumes or since it is 70 years old it will have lost its effectiveness?

The smoke compound Nb.Hgr.39 is mixture of Hexachloroethane / Aluminium
    or Hexachloroethane / Zinc. . . . . . . . . . . . It will work,I think.

Would the old compound give off any fumes when it is 70 years old or would it have to be ignited ?

Would have to be ignited I think. At least I hope so as I have several smoke grenades that are full!!!! Had them for years and have never noticed anything that would cause concern.
