    S-mine cleaning/restoration

    Hi gents,

Just picked up this s-mine and was wondering if you guys had any experience or ideas on a way to remove most of the rust without damaging the original paint. Thanks in advance

Evaporust works great on getting rust off & not harming the paint.

I use it all the time. For that smi I would soak paper towels & wrap it. Then wrap it in Saran Wrap to keep it moist. Let it sit a day or two & presto most of the rust will be gone.

Awesome, thanks glen. Would it be safe to put the bolts and and small bits in a bowl of the evaporust?

The hardware will be fine soaking in it....but on small parts it may take the paint off.

As for stabilizing it you could give it a wipe with some light machine oil etc.

Use oxalic acid (available quite inexpensive onthe internet) and afterwards a little oil. The results are stunning:

Ben, do you soak the item or wrap it in paper towels damped with it like whsammler?

I second Evapo-rust or Metal Rescue. They both work by the same process. I often use it to drop small parts into and have had great success. Personally, I like to monitor the process and remove items with just a small amount of patina remaining to keep the vintage look. I purchased some oxalic acid but haven't had a chance to try it yet but am looking forward to see what it can do. I suspect that it will be more effective at cleaning the rust stains from the paint than the Evapo-rust. The great thing about Evapo-rust is that it is very safe to use and you don't have to be concerned about fumes or having it contact your skin. Can't say the same about the oxalic acid.

For protection after removing rust I like to use conservator's wax. It is intended for use in museums and other similar collections. It's a micro crystalline wax which will seal the item and make it safe to handle so that you don't have to worry about the oils in your skin causing damage over time. Unlike oil, it won't evaporate over time or rub off and possibly stain other items in your collection. You can apply it to metal, paint, leather, rubber, and even paper labels. Great stuff.

                    Hey Glen,

If I am counting correctly, I see 4 S.Mi.44's in your picture. That is the most I've even seen in one place. If you ever need to let one go, keep me in mind.

Do you have any S.Mi.Z.44 fuzes to go with them?

Hey glen, could you soak it in a pot of the evaporust? What do think about doing that?

                        Sorry for the late reply.

Soaking the parts in a pot of evaporust should be fine.

As for spare fuzes, I’ve no extras at the moment, they do come up fore sale on eBay & dealers sites quite often.
