This water-level is not for military purposes.

Artillery devices were various Gunner's Quadrant :

Really? Everything I have found and I’ve shown this to says it’s an artillery device but not sure which device, definitely not a civilian level device , this came from a WW2 navy guy that was on the USS Lexington

It is interesting that there is no navy or army marking on it, even on a wooden case is not a marking.

        ???

A clinometer is the same thing as a gunner's quadrant. You place it on the breech of any artillery piece to measure the angle of elevation.

Yes, and with artillery, elevation known as quadrant. That is where the term "Gunner's Quadrant" comes from.

              Wehrmacht Artillery Clinometer

              Hello

On the subject of clinometers, here are two interesting devices for sale on the web. The sellers are calling them howitzer clinometers and I have seen such examples in the past.

              https://www.kijiji.ca/v-art-collecti...ww2/1132616824

              http://www.icollector.com/HOWITZER-I...W-II_i27057826

Are these models German made, and was it used exclusively for howitzers?

              Thanks very much in advance.

triad08 - they are the fraudsters.
This device is a Russian control quadrant for mortars (Контрольный минометный квадрант КМ-1)
It is designed to check the installation of sights on mortars.

                  Hello Klarkon,

This is certainly a stunning revelation! I would never have guessed that these clinometers were Russian units. Maybe these fraudsters think they will get more money for their clinometers if they advertise them as being German WW2 equipment. In any case, I thank you kindly for sharing this information with me!
