M24 Stick Grenade Help

Hi Gents,

I've recently been offered this seemingly nice looking M24 stick grenade but am wondering if I can get your opinions on the paint and ink stamp found on the head?

The handle looks good to me but has obviously been paired up with the head after the fact as the codes/years don't match. Any input would be appreciated!

Looks to be an earlier dated head (1940) and later dated handle (1943).....This generally happened when they were deactivated en masse.....Than haphazardly just randomly put back together and given out as souvenirs.....I'd say both appear to be original....Just curious though as to why the head doesn't have stenciling on the side, although it appears it has been repainted except where the WaA sits.....Bodes

Hi.. nice original m24,, albeit a mix on the dates, the can looks original and not repainted, the stenciling was stopped mid 1940.
Can you post better piccs of the can , the fuse area is still intact so I am guessing they un crimped the can to empty it ?

You can clearly see a difference in paint color and strokes....Also I didn't say post war repaint, but likely done during WW2....Bodes

Some were sent from factory like this on the tops where the waff stamp is, I have seen full compliment boxes of M24 all identical that were direct from the factory.

This is more than likely where they crossed over from stenciling the cans to stopping the stenciling in mid 1940.

if there is stenciling under the paint then yes a repaint ( this you will see under the paint if its there) if not then original paint to the can.

Interesting bits of info gents, I appreciate the commentary.

These are the seller's photos so I'll ask for close ups of the metal head where the stenciling would have potentially been so that we can get to the bottom of this.

Either way, I've decided to go along with the purchase as I'm located in Canada and these aren't the easiest to attain up here but with that said, I'd like to learn as much as possible about the item so I'll be interested to see what you guys say when I am able to post the pics.

On another note, would anyone have a clue where I could turn if I wanted to find a RR 1940 stamped stick? I believe the handles are unregulated so I could have one shipped from overseas but I suspect they're not just growing on trees these days...

I'm almost at 100% sure that the can was not post-war repainted,
as I have 1 in my collection too, which has this peculiar painting, leaving out the WaA & eagle.

Again, nobody has mentioned postwar re-paint......The only thing that readily comes to mind is the Wehrmacht's switch to feld grau paint on their helmets, etc....Perhaps they repainted the grenades to reflect this change(?)....Bodes

The standard F/G colour ranged from batch to batch and was never uniform in its exact colour,, as long as it was in the range it was accepted. The Wehrmacht as far as I know did recall or change ordnance colours because of slight colour differences.

You will notice that Ferns can only has pain repaint to the top of the can and I little bit of over paint to the side. I could post some from my collection to show you the varying differences in colour, if I had the time.


Many early cans were retouched with a brush round the crimp edge to form a water tight seal once the can was crimped after the filler parcel was inserted into the empty can.
As to Post war this is not the case, ,original paint on original M24

I've been off on vacation for a couple weeks but am back and have just had a moment to take a couple supplementary shots of the grenade. I hope these close ups are sufficient to determine whether the paint is period or not.

On another note, I'd like to find a fragmentation sleeve to go along with the grenade, might anyone have any leads?
