This relic condition Mills IS from WWI, but it's a No.5, rather than the later No. 36.
Brass base plug shows April 1916 as mfg. date. A threaded base plug was later added to this grenade allowing the Mills to be fired from a rifle. These rifle capable weapons were designated as No. 23. The No.36 came along a few years later, & was standard defensive grenade of the British forces during the Second World War. The. No.36 was in service up to the early 70's.
