    2cm Sprenggranat Patronen Case

    Evening all, just got another 2cm Flak Patrone case with a nice clear label inside the lid, however I'm not 100% sure what the green stripe means? And would I be right in thinking the blue stripe means armour piecing?

    That's a HE training round with yellow tracer. Perhaps the green stripe means it is training ammo (übungs). I haven't got any of those, sorry.

        Thanks for the help guys that's really interesting, so as a training round would it still be a live round that was fired on a range or are they inert dummy rounds?
        The tracer element confuses me?

          It would be a live round used for training purposes, that's why it has a tracer, but not with a live shell. Some variations had a live fuze, without explosives. Others could have self destruction also. The dummies were called "Exercise" and are sometimes marked with "Ex". on the shell.

            It is TAR filled High Explosive projectile shell with dummy fuze.It does not explode on impact like normal HE-round.Tracer element helps showing where the rounds go.

              Fantastic stuff guys you learn something new everyday and today I learned about training rounds. Certainly makes sense to use non explosive rounds on the ranges and the yellow tracer helps identify where the round falls during gunnery practice.

              Thanks guys your knowledge is awesome

                The blue stripe indicates that the rounds had steel cases.
                The green diagonal stripe indactes practice (Üb) ammunition.

                Ex= Exerzier=exercise, these were always fully inert rounds, sometimes made out of empty shells and cases, sometimes made out of wood, plastic, aluminium, steel, brass etc.

                For 2 cm Flak 30 38, a lot of different versions were made, most well known are the ones with a steel base and a brown rubber or black body.

                One very important remark: German practice rounds (in general) were not ALL inert, there were practice rounds with a HE load as well.
                Just as a warning....

                @Jussi: nice round !

                  As Marcel told above,some german Ubungs rounds had small explosive charge inside.Most of the HE training models which i have seen had dummy top fuzes with UP ARROW marking.Not seen training HE with real top detonator.

                  But useally explosive charge inside is triggered by tracer element.When tracer burns to end,it explodes the round.It is self destruction.

                    Practice shells with a (reduced) HE load is more something you will find in the bigger calibers, not 2 cm.
                    In reality, it's rare but not unlikely to find seemingly inert practice shells which turn out to contain a HE load or HE parts.
                    "Blind" shells, which should be inert filled according to regulations, have been found with complete or partial HE loads.
                    On a few occasions, inert tar filled shells were found, fitted with a dummy fuzes, but with a HE boostercharge inside.

                    These might all be unusual and rare finds, and the chance a collector might find one are slim, but there's always a chance.

                    @Jussi, you lucky man...

                      Jussy,

                      Just revising my collection and I have noted I've got some Luftwaffe 2cm MG/FF and MG151/20 training rounds with AZ1502 and ZZ1505 fuzes. Other two have unmarked fuzes and never had been live, and other two have solid tip, all on Minen shells, without tracer cell. Just one is a solid shell with UP ARROWS. The are painted all light grey.

                        Yes but i was writing about 2cm Flak rounds(as the thread starter told his box is for 2cm Flak).All 2cm Flak practice rounds i have ever seen were green.Never seen them with real detonators.Always with dummy aluhead with up arrow.And believe me,i have seen few hundreds of these 2cm Flak practice rounds(different models).Some have yellow stripe.Useally selfdestroying is made with tracer on these i believe.

                        Airplane ammunition colors are not same.

                          Yep, it's true, we were talking about Flak rounds. I haven't seen any training with war head either. I guess I was mixing up this thread and the other about LW ammo.
