Hi Folks - Hoping you can help me with any information about this round? I'm new to this but learning along the way. I'd be interested in what you can tell me about these pictures. I've never seen a projectile "tip" like this before. Is that some sort of protective cap that went on in place of a fuse, or is this another type of fuse? I'd also be interested in any info you could give based on the markings on the crate and label as to what exactly this was? Any comments on it's approximate value would be appreciated too...thanks!

Königstiger (Tiger II), not Tiger ammunition.
If this really is a genuine Kw.K. 43 round, then the shell is either a Pzgr 39-1 or 39-1 AI.
Your shell has lost it's ballistic cap and drivingbands.
The case is not for your round, but for the 8,8 cm Spgr.Patr. Kw.K. 43, which was an HE round. (yours is a APHE round).

Zunder - a follow up
First of all thanks to you and everyone for the feedback. It's very appreciated as I' have a lot to learn about these rounds (but boy do I love the history!).
I'm not familiar with the term ballistic cap? Does that imply this type of round did not have a true fuze on the top but merely a shaped cap to assist with aerodynamics of flight?
Others have mentioned that this projectile is a tiger1 or flak projectile as opposed to a tiger 2....is that your opinion as well (if you can tell)?
Finally, I'd love to hear an estimate of what you think this is all worth as I'm trying to buy it and have it (legally) shipped into the USA but it's quite expensive!
Thank you again!!!

This one has a fuze in the base, as it is an armour-piercing shell.
Yes, the ballistic cap is a sheet metal cap, that makes the projectile more aerodynamical.
The piece you see now is called a "brecherkappe" which is a softer piece of metal designed to prevent the hardened AP shell from bouncing of sloped armour.
Like i said before, this type of projectile could have been used on Kw.K. 43 rounds, provided it is a Pzgr 39-1 or Pzgr 39-1 AI.
But yes, the same projectile was also used on 8,8 cm Kw.K. 36 rounds, as well as several other 8,8 cm types.
Problem is that the shell is in such a bad condition, it probably not possible to tell what it is exactly and with this i mean: either 8,8 cm Pzgr. 39, Pzgr 39-1 or Pzgr 39-1 AI.
So in short:
crate is for 8,8 cm Kw.K. 43 (Kingtiger)
shellcase is for 8,8 cm Kw.K. 43 (Kingtiger)
Shell COULD have been used in 8,8 cm Kw.K. 43 (Kingtiger), regardless as to what other people say. (Buying books+manuals really helps a lot)
If the price is right, i would buy this round+crate and let him keep the shell, it's value is lower then the price of shipping.

No Problem.
But like i wrote before: invest in good documentation and save every bit of info you come across on the web.
It will save you money in the long run, and keep you safe as well.
Take care,
